The electromagnetic-thermal coupling effects of cross-slot frequency selective surfaces (FSS) were investigated. Narrower slots and increased incident angles in TE polarization lead to higher temperatures, while TM polarization shows the opposite trend.
Area of Science:
- Electromagnetics
- Thermal Engineering
- Materials Science
Background:
- High-power microwave applications necessitate understanding the electromagnetic-thermal effects of frequency selective surfaces (FSS).
- The thermal behavior of FSS structures can significantly impact their performance and reliability.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the electromagnetic-thermal coupling effects of cross-slot FSS.
- To analyze the influence of slot width and incident angle on FSS thermal performance.
- To provide experimental validation for simulation results.
Main Methods:
- Utilized an equivalent circuit method and CST software for electromagnetic analysis.
- Employed COMSOL Multiphysics for multi-field simulation of thermal effects.
- Conducted experimental verification using a horn antenna at 20 W power.
Main Results:
- Maximum temperature in cross-slot FSS occurs at the center of the slot.
- Narrower slots result in more severe thermal effects compared to wider slots.
- TE polarization shows increasing maximum temperature with incident angle; TM polarization shows decreasing maximum temperature.
Conclusions:
- The study quantifies the electromagnetic-thermal coupling in cross-slot FSS.
- Slot geometry and incident wave polarization critically influence FSS thermal management.
- Findings are crucial for designing robust FSS in high-power microwave systems.
