Assessment of the Mouth

470
A thorough mouth assessment, including inspection and palpation of the lips, gums, tongue, tonsils, uvula, and pharynx, is crucial in detecting potential health issues. Diseases ranging from oral cancer to systemic conditions like diabetes could be identified early through careful oral examination. This article provides a detailed guide on conducting a comprehensive mouth assessment.

    Area of Science:

    • Oral health integration in primary care education.
    • Health disparities reduction strategies.

    Background:

    • Primary care (PC) training programs require oral health (OH) integration to address health disparities.
    • Evaluating OH education across diverse PC disciplines is crucial.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess and compare the integration of oral health education within various primary care disciplines.
    • Identify best practices for OH curriculum development in PC.

    Main Methods:

    • A 2017 survey of deans and program directors (PDs) across 13 PC disciplines (2,245 programs).
    • Utilized the Input Process Output framework to analyze training factors.
    • Analysis included nine disciplines with a ≥40% response rate (767 respondents).

    Main Results:

    • Physician assistant (PA) and pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) programs reported significant departmental support for OH.
    • Most PA and PNP programs covered OH risk assessment and evaluation in their curricula.
    • Over 60% of PA and PNP PDs affirmed learners' ability to answer OH board exam questions.

    Conclusions:

    • Successful OH integration strategies from PNP and PA programs can be disseminated.
    • Sharing best practices can enhance OH education across PC disciplines.
    • Strengthened OH education in PC is vital for reducing health disparities.
