Summary

Elevated Red Blood Cell Distribution Width (RDW) is linked to worse outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. This finding suggests RDW may help predict mortality and septic shock risk in these individuals.

Background:

  • Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) presents significant global health challenges.
  • Red Blood Cell Distribution Width (RDW) is a known indicator of morbidity and mortality across various conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between elevated RDW and adverse outcomes in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of clinical data from 294 hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
  • Primary outcome: in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes: septic shock, mechanical ventilation, and length of stay.
  • Statistical adjustments were made for anemia, ferritin, lactate, lymphocyte count, and other clinical confounders.

Main Results:

  • Nearly 50% of patients exhibited increased RDW.
  • Elevated RDW was significantly associated with increased risk of in-hospital mortality (aOR 4.6) and septic shock (aOR 4.6).
  • No significant association was found with mechanical ventilation or length of stay.

Conclusions:

  • Increased RDW is a significant predictor of mortality and septic shock in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
  • RDW serves as a valuable prognostic marker for severe outcomes in COVID-19.
