Summary

Surgical pyloric drainage procedures in dogs resulted in significant widening of the gastrointestinal tract, except for the Fredet-Ramstedt pyloromyotomy (FRP). The FRP procedure showed near-complete healing with no significant lumen enlargement compared to controls.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the postmortem macroscopic and morphometric changes in the gastrointestinal tract following five different gastric drainage procedures in dogs.
  • To assess the efficacy and anatomical consequences of Fredet-Ramstedt pyloromyotomy versus other pyloroplasty and gastrojejunostomy techniques.

    • In the FRP group, the myotomy site showed near-complete healing with no significant increase in pyloric lumen size compared to control dogs.

    Conclusions:

    • Fredet-Ramstedt pyloromyotomy is associated with minimal anatomical changes and excellent healing, maintaining a normal pyloric lumen.
    • Other gastric drainage procedures, including various pyloroplasties and gastrojejunostomies, lead to significant and persistent widening of the gastrointestinal tract.
    • These findings have implications for surgical technique selection in veterinary gastric surgery.
