This study developed a method to detect task-specific ionic liquid (TSIL) residues in environmental samples. The high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method is sensitive and accurate for TSIL residue analysis.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Chemistry
- Analytical Chemistry
Background:
- Task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs) are increasingly used, raising concerns about their environmental impact.
- No established methods exist for analyzing TSIL residues in environmental matrices.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a sensitive analytical method for detecting TSIL residues.
- To establish a foundation for future environmental toxicity studies of TSILs.
Main Methods:
- Residues of four specific TSILs were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS).
- Accelerated solvent extraction was employed for sample preparation from soil and plant matrices.
- Instrumental detection limits were as low as 10-15 g.
Main Results:
- The developed method demonstrated high sensitivity with method detection limits below 1.40 ng g-1 for all four TSILs.
- Low coefficients of variation (0.38%-4.43%) were observed in water, soil, and plant samples, indicating method robustness.
- The analytical performance meets established standards for residue analysis.
Conclusions:
- A reliable analytical method for TSIL residue analysis in environmental samples was successfully established.
- This method provides a crucial tool for assessing the environmental fate and potential toxicity of TSILs.
