Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells01:06

Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells

4.5K
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that divide and produce different cell types. Ordinarily, cells that have differentiated into a specific cell type are terminally differentiated; however, scientists have found a way to reprogram these mature cells so that they dedifferentiate and return to an unspecialized, proliferative state. These cells are pluripotent like embryonic stem cells—able to produce all cell types—and are called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).

Stem Cell Culture

5.6K
Stem cell research aims to find ways to use stem cells to regenerate and repair cellular damage. Over time, most adult cells undergo the wear and tear of aging and lose their ability to divide and repair themselves. Stem cells do not display a particular morphology or function. Adult stem cells, which exist as a small subset of cells in most tissues, keep dividing and can differentiate into a number of specialized cells generally formed by that tissue. These cells enable the body to renew and...

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Stem Cell Biology
  • Regenerative Medicine

Background:

  • Human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) hold significant promise for disease modeling and therapeutic applications.
  • Standardized protocols are crucial for ensuring the safety and efficacy of hiPSC research and clinical translation.
  • China's scientific community has recognized the need for specific guidelines for hiPSC handling and production.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish the first comprehensive guidelines for human-induced pluripotent stem cells in China.
  • To standardize the production and quality control of hiPSCs.
  • To promote the adoption of best practices in hiPSC research and application.

Main Methods:

  • Jointly drafted by experts from the Chinese Society for Stem Cell Research.
  • Specifies technical requirements, test methods, and handling instructions for hiPSCs.
  • Covers labeling, packaging, storage, transportation, and waste management.

Main Results:

  • Publication of the "Requirements for Human-Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells" standard.
  • Guidelines released by the Chinese Society for Cell Biology on January 9, 2021.
  • Effective date of the standard: April 9, 2021.

Conclusions:

  • The guidelines aim to promote institutional adoption of proper hiPSC protocols.
  • Expected to accelerate the international standardization of human-induced pluripotent stem cells.
  • Facilitates the safe and effective application of hiPSCs in research and therapy.
