    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of laser-assisted arterial and venous anastomoses.
    • To compare laser anastomoses with conventional sutured repairs in rabbit models.

    Main Methods:

    • Microscope-guided CO2 laser (60-100 mW) used for end-to-end anastomosis of rabbit carotid arteries and vena cavae.
    • Comparison with interrupted suture technique for vascular repair.
    • Patency and aneurysm formation assessed over 24 hours to 19 weeks.

    Main Results:

    • Laser carotid anastomoses achieved 93% patency, with 9% developing aneurysms.
    • Hand-sewn carotid anastomoses had 91% patency and no aneurysms.
    • Laser vena cava anastomoses showed 96% patency, with 7% developing aneurysms compared to 15% in sutured controls.
    • Histology revealed thermal injury with complete luminal coverage by 14 days in laser repairs.

    Conclusions:

    • Laser-assisted arterial and venous anastomoses are feasible, simple, and rapid.
    • Patency rates are comparable to sutured anastomoses.
    • Arterial aneurysms are a potential complication of laser anastomoses, even at low energy levels.
