Low serum transthyretin levels predict stroke-associated pneumonia

Low transthyretin levels are linked to a higher risk of stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) in ischemic stroke patients. Early identification of low transthyretin may help prevent SAP.

- Serum transthyretin levels were significantly lower in SAP patients compared to non-SAP patients (231 ± 80 vs. 279 ± 75; P < 0.001).
- Low transthyretin levels (≤252 mg/L) were independently associated with an increased risk of SAP (OR 3.370; 95% CI: 1.763-6.441; P < 0.001).
- SAP patients exhibited worse clinical outcomes at discharge. Dysphagia, leukocyte count, and NLR also correlated with SAP.
Conclusions:
- Low serum transthyretin levels significantly increase the risk of developing SAP.
- Transthyretin levels may aid in the early identification and prevention of SAP in high-risk patients.
