Summary

Nursing students demonstrated improved self-efficacy in caring for diverse immigrant populations after a service-learning experience. This practical training enhanced their skills in screening, education, and healthcare access for immigrant clients.

Background:

The U.S. has a large and diverse immigrant population.
Nurses encounter immigrant clients across all practice areas.
Culturally competent care is essential for this demographic.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess nursing students' self-efficacy in working with immigrant clients.
To evaluate the impact of a service-learning experience on student confidence.
To identify specific areas of improvement in cultural care delivery.

Main Methods:

A pre-/posttest descriptive study design was employed.
Service-learning occurred at a resettlement agency.
Self-efficacy was measured regarding screening, health education, and healthcare access for immigrants.

Main Results:

Overall self-efficacy scores significantly improved post-intervention.
Students showed enhanced confidence in 17 of 19 measured items.
Improvements were noted in cultural screening, education, and access assistance.

Conclusions:

Structured service-learning with immigrant resettlement programs enhances nursing students' self-efficacy.
Prelicensure education can effectively prepare nurses for immigrant healthcare needs.
Experiential learning is key to developing cultural competence in nursing.
