    Summary

    Retroperitoneal teratomas in children often show unique "shard-like" calcifications on X-rays. This finding, along with resulting hypertension, suggests surgery is often the best next step after initial imaging.

    Background:

    • Retroperitoneal teratomas are congenital tumors that can occur along the spine.
    • These tumors can present with various clinical manifestations, including hypertension due to renal compromise.

    Observation:

    • Characteristic "shard-like" calcifications were observed in the retroperitoneal teratomas of three pediatric patients.
    • These calcifications were identified through roentgenographic (X-ray) assessments.

    Findings:

    • The presence of "shard-like" calcifications in retroperitoneal teratomas is a highly specific diagnostic finding.
    • Hypertension, secondary to renal compression by the tumor, was noted in all affected children and resolved post-surgery.

    Implications:

    • Extensive imaging beyond plain abdominal films and a single urinary tract study may be unnecessary for diagnosing these specific teratomas.
    • Prompt surgical intervention is recommended once characteristic findings are identified, potentially simplifying the diagnostic workup.
