Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology

Background:

  • Biliary pathology is a frequent complication during pregnancy.
  • These conditions can pose significant risks to both the mother and the developing fetus.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and outcomes of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in pregnant women.
  • To assess the risk of pregnancy loss associated with this surgical procedure during gestation.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study was conducted analyzing laparoscopic cholecystectomies performed on pregnant women.
  • Data were collected from January 2017 to April 2020 at Hospital Universitario "Dr. José Eleuterio González".

Main Results:

  • A total of 46 cases were reviewed.
  • Only 3 patients experienced pregnancy loss: one immediately post-surgery, one at 8 weeks' gestation, and a third due to gestational hypertension complications.
  • This indicates a low overall rate of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • Pancreaticobiliary conditions during pregnancy are associated with high-risk pregnancies.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a viable and preferable surgical option for selected pregnant patients experiencing biliary complications.
