Imaging Studies III: Computed Tomography

78
DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

Computed Tomography

6.8K
Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Radiology
  • Endodontics

Background:

  • Smartphones are increasingly vital in dentistry for information exchange.
  • Their potential for tomographic evaluation necessitates accuracy assessment.
  • This study investigates smartphone app performance in dental diagnostics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate smartphone application accuracy for root canal system (RCS) diagnosis.
  • To assess smartphone application accuracy for root canal length measurement.
  • To compare smartphone application diagnostic performance against specialized computer software.

Main Methods:

  • 92 lower incisor teeth DICOM files were analyzed.
  • Two examiners used CS 3D Imaging software and two smartphone apps (DroidRender, Horos Mobile).
  • RCS assessed via Vertucci's classification; length measured using linear cusp-apex. Reference standard from 3 experienced examiners.

Main Results:

  • Smartphone apps demonstrated comparable diagnostic performance to computer software for RCS evaluation.
  • DroidRender: Se=1.00, Sp=0.95, Ac=0.97; Horos Mobile: Se=0.95, Sp=0.94, Ac=0.95.
  • Length measurements showed discrepancies >1.0 mm with smartphone apps, indicating potential clinical relevance.

Conclusions:

  • Smartphone applications provide diagnostic performance similar to computer software for RCS assessment.
  • While RCS diagnosis is accurate, length measurements require careful clinical interpretation due to discrepancies.
