    Area of Science:

    • Gerontology
    • Oncology
    • Preventive Medicine

    Background:

    • The elderly population is underrepresented in cancer prevention research.
    • Limited data exist on the benefits, risks, and feasibility of cancer prevention strategies for older adults.
    • Existing health beliefs and practices may hinder the adoption of cancer prevention measures in this demographic.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review current evidence on cancer prevention for the elderly.
    • To identify recommended screening practices for this population.
    • To highlight barriers and future research needs in elderly cancer prevention.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of available data and literature on cancer prevention in the elderly.
    • Analysis of current screening guidelines for breast, colorectal, and cervical cancers.
    • Discussion of factors influencing the utilization of preventive services.

    Main Results:

    • Annual screening for breast cancer in elderly women and colorectal cancer in both sexes is supported by available data.
    • Pap smear screening is indicated for elderly women with limited prior screening history.
    • Physician and patient health beliefs may present barriers to cancer prevention uptake.

    Conclusions:

    • Targeted cancer screening is warranted for the elderly population.
    • Further research is essential to establish efficacy and improve delivery of cancer prevention measures for older adults.
    • Addressing health beliefs and practices is key to enhancing cancer prevention in this demographic.
