Summary

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) patients with dysphagia, or swallowing difficulties, are older and require higher Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) levels. An ENT exam assessing swallowing is recommended before initiating CPAP therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of dysphagia in OSA patients.
  • To correlate swallowing difficulties with patient-specific parameters.
  • To assess the impact of dysphagia on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) requirements.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 36 Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) patients was studied.
  • Patients were categorized into two groups: with and without dysphagia.
  • Clinical data, including age, anthropometrics, and CPAP titration results, were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Patients with dysphagia were older than those without.
  • OSA patients with dysphagia required significantly higher CPAP pressures (12.6 ± 1 vs. 10.5 ± 1.9, p = 0.003).
  • No significant differences were observed in other measured parameters between the groups.

Conclusions:

  • Dysphagia is present in a subset of OSA patients.
  • Swallowing assessment should be part of the ENT evaluation before CPAP initiation.
