    Summary

    Pretreatment with magnesium sulfate did not alter succinylcholine-induced neuromuscular blockade. However, magnesium sulfate significantly prevented the dangerous increase in serum potassium levels observed in control patients.

    Background:

    • Succinylcholine is a common muscle relaxant used during anesthesia.
    • Succinylcholine can cause a potentially dangerous increase in serum potassium levels (hyperkalemia).
    • Magnesium sulfate is known for its various physiological effects, including effects on neuromuscular transmission.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of magnesium sulfate pretreatment on succinylcholine-induced neuromuscular blockade.
    • To determine if magnesium sulfate can prevent the hyperkalemic response to succinylcholine.

    Main Methods:

    • A comparative study involving two groups of ten normal patients each.
    • One group received magnesium sulfate (60 mg/kg) pretreatment, while the control group received saline.

    • This finding suggests a potential role for magnesium sulfate in mitigating succinylcholine-induced hyperkalemia in clinical practice.
