    Summary

This study investigated the mutagenic potential of captan. While in vitro tests showed cell damage, in vivo studies and dominant lethal tests in mice did not reveal mutagenic activity.

    Area of Science:

    • Toxicology
    • Genetics
    • Environmental Health

    Background:

    • Captan is a widely used fungicide with potential health implications.
    • Understanding its mutagenic activity is crucial for risk assessment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the possible mutagenic activity of captan.
    • To assess captan's genotoxicity using multiple testing methods.

    Main Methods:

    • In vitro cytogenetic studies using human diploid cells.
    • In vivo cytogenetic studies in rats.
    • Dominant lethal assay in mice.

    Main Results:

    • In vitro studies indicated mitotic inhibition and cell stickiness at high captan concentrations, but no chromosomal aberrations.
    • In vivo cytogenetic studies in rats showed no chromosomal aberrations.
    • The dominant lethal study in mice did not detect any mutagenic effects.

    Conclusions:

    • Captan demonstrated some cytotoxic effects in vitro but did not exhibit mutagenic activity in vivo.
    • The findings suggest captan may not pose a significant mutagenic risk under the tested conditions.
