Background:

Understanding innovation implementation in complex systems requires examining the interplay between processes and context.
Normalization Process Theory (NPT) explains how people adopt innovations, while the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) details contextual factors.
Combining NPT and CFIR offers a comprehensive approach to studying implementation dynamics.

Purpose of the Study:

To demonstrate the integration of NPT and CFIR for analyzing implementation processes and context.
To inform the development of research tools and analysis strategies for implementation studies.
To enhance the understanding of how innovations are embedded into practice.

Main Methods:

Co-developed an interview guide integrating NPT and CFIR constructs with stakeholders.
Conducted and transcribed 28 interviews with professionals involved in innovation implementation.
Developed an integrated coding manual and applied it to analyze interview data.

Main Results:

Integrating CFIR domains with NPT mechanisms strengthened the analysis of implementation processes.
Simultaneous coding across both theoretical frameworks revealed the entanglement of process and context.
The integrated approach provided richer insights into the interactions between implementation processes and contextual determinants.

Conclusions:

The integration of NPT and CFIR guides the exploration of complex interactions for embedding innovations into routine practices.
This approach moves beyond descriptive determinants to explain the mechanisms of change during implementation.
Mechanism-based explanations derived from integrated NPT and CFIR illuminate practical strategies for supporting implementation.
