Summary
Small peripheral lung cancers rarely invade the chest wall. This case highlights a poor prognosis despite treatment, emphasizing the need for awareness of this aggressive presentation in lung cancer.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Thoracic Surgery
Background:
- Chest wall infiltration by lung cancer is uncommon, particularly with small tumors.
- The understanding of pathophysiology and prognosis for such cases is limited.
Observation:
- A case of small peripheral lung cancer with significant chest wall invasion is presented.
- The tumor exhibited exophytic growth and chest wall infiltration.
Findings:
- Despite complete resection and adjuvant therapy, the patient experienced lymph node recurrence.
- The patient succumbed to the disease within 1.5 years.
Implications:
- Small peripheral lung cancers can present aggressively with chest wall invasion.
- This presentation is associated with a poor prognosis, irrespective of initial tumor size.
