Area of Science:

  • Forensic pathology
  • Cellular biology
  • Biomarker discovery

Background:

  • Wound examination is crucial for forensic pathologists to differentiate antemortem (before death) from postmortem (after death) injuries.
  • Accurate wound age estimation is vital for determining the sequence of events and the wound's relationship to the cause of death.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate bone marrow-derived cells as potential markers for determining wound vitality and age in forensic practice.
  • To assess the utility of these cellular markers in enhancing the objectivity and accuracy of forensic wound analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Exploration of specific target cells and molecules relevant to wound healing.
  • Analysis of bone marrow-derived cells as candidate biomarkers.
  • Evaluation of marker combinations for improved diagnostic reliability.

Main Results:

  • Bone marrow-derived cells show promise as markers in forensic wound assessment.
  • A single marker lacks sufficient reliability for precise wound age determination.
  • Combining multiple markers, including bone marrow-derived cells, enhances objectivity and accuracy.

Conclusions:

  • Bone marrow-derived cells represent a valuable area for forensic wound age research.
  • Multi-marker approaches are essential for reliable and objective forensic wound age estimation.
  • Further research into cellular markers can significantly advance forensic pathology techniques.
