Summary

Virtual reality training combined with task-oriented training significantly improved stroke patient mobility and physical performance. Both training methods showed similar effects on gait performance after eight weeks.

Background:

  • Virtual reality (VR) offers immersive training environments for motor recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effects of task-oriented training (TOT).
  • To compare VR training with TOT for stroke patients.
  • To assess improvements in mobility, physical performance, and balance.

Main Methods:

  • Randomized controlled trial with 52 stroke patients (40-70 years).
  • Group A received VR + TOT; Group B received TOT.
  • Intervention duration: 8 weeks, 3 days/week.
  • Assessments included Fugl-Meyer, Berg Balance, Timed Up and Go, and Dynamic Gait Index.

Main Results:

  • Group A showed significant improvements in Fugl-Meyer and Berg Balance scores at 4 weeks compared to Group B.
  • Timed Up and Go Test improved significantly in Group A at 6 weeks.
  • Both groups demonstrated significant improvement in Dynamic Gait Index after 8 weeks.

Conclusions:

  • VR combined with TOT enhances physical performance, mobility, and balance in stroke survivors.
  • VR and TOT demonstrate comparable effects on gait performance post-stroke.
