This study validates the constrained modulus from CPTu tests against DMT flat dilatometer results in Croatian soils. Findings show significant deviations for intermediate soil groups, improving engineering characterization.
Area of Science:
- Geotechnical Engineering
- Soil Mechanics
- In-situ Testing
Background:
- Accurate soil characterization is crucial for engineering projects.
- Intermediate soils, common in Croatia, pose challenges for standard analysis.
- In-situ testing provides valuable data for soil property determination.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare and validate the constrained modulus derived from CPTu and DMT tests.
- To analyze the performance of these methods across different soil types, including intermediate soils.
- To improve the accuracy of soil characterization for engineering applications.
Main Methods:
- In-situ measurements using Cone Penetration Test with pore pressure measurement (CPTu) and Dilatometer Test (DMT).
- Comparison of CPTu cone resistance (Qt1) with DMT parameters (ED/σ'v0 and KD).
- Analysis of soil data grouped by soil type (clay, silt) and subgroups based on identification parameters.
Main Results:
- The constrained modulus from CPTu was validated against DMT results.
- Significant deviations were observed for intermediate soil groups compared to published data.
- Subgroup analysis revealed distinct results for clay and silty soils.
Conclusions:
- The study highlights the need for localized soil characterization, especially for intermediate soils.
- CPTu and DMT provide complementary data for reliable soil property estimation.
- The findings offer improved methods for calculating constrained modulus, enhancing engineering practice.
