Summary

Anisakiasis, a parasitic infection from raw fish, rarely affects tonsils. This case highlights a worm found in a patient

Background:

  • Anisakiasis is a foodborne parasitic infection caused by Anisakis larvae, typically found in the stomach and intestines.
  • Tonsillar anisakiasis is an extremely rare presentation of this parasitic infection.

Observation:

  • A 54-year-old woman presented with a sore throat and foreign-body sensation after consuming raw fish.
  • Endoscopic examination revealed a wriggling worm beneath the mucosa of the right palatine tonsil.

Findings:

  • The worm was successfully removed and histologically confirmed as Anisakis, diagnosing tonsillar anisakiasis.
  • This case represents a rare instance of Anisakis larvae lodging in the palatine tonsils.
