Reconstructing medial canthal defects can be challenging. A modified rhomboid flap offers a simple and reliable solution for these challenging reconstructions, achieving satisfactory cosmetic and functional outcomes.

Background:

  • Medial canthal defect reconstruction presents challenges in achieving aesthetic and functional results.
  • Recreating natural appearance with minimal scarring is difficult.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a modified rhomboid flap technique for medial canthal defect reconstruction.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of this technique in a case series.

Main Methods:

  • A modified rhomboid flap technique was employed for medial canthal defects.
  • Flaps were superiorly based for defects above the medial canthal tendon, inferiorly based for defects below, and combined for large defects.
  • The technique was applied to five patients undergoing basal cell carcinoma resection.

Main Results:

  • Five patients (mean age 76.2 years) underwent reconstruction using the modified rhomboid flap.
  • Reconstructions included superiorly based, inferiorly based, and combined flaps.
  • All patients achieved complete primary closure with satisfactory cosmetic and functional results after a mean follow-up of 374.4 days.

Conclusions:

  • The modified rhomboid flap is a straightforward and dependable method for reconstructing various medial canthal area defects.
  • This technique provides excellent aesthetic and functional outcomes.
