Hospital electronic prescribing (ePrescribing) systems represent significant international investment.
Despite investment, realizing safety, quality, and efficiency gains from ePrescribing remains challenging for many healthcare organizations.

Purpose of the Study:

To provide policy-relevant insights for optimizing hospital ePrescribing systems.
To maximize the benefits and minimize the risks associated with ePrescribing.

Main Methods:

A systematic scoping review of literature from MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL databases.
Inclusion of primary studies on ePrescribing optimization strategies, with data abstraction until saturation.
Theoretical and thematic synthesis from a medicine life-cycle perspective, including expert consultation.

Main Results:

1367 studies met inclusion criteria from over 23,000 initially identified.
Thematic synthesis of 76 studies revealed key optimization approaches: stakeholder engagement, system redesign, technological innovation, and education/training.
Multicomponent interventions (50 studies) targeting multiple medication management steps were more common than single-component interventions (26 studies).

Conclusions:

Numerous strategies exist to enhance ePrescribing system performance.
