Area of Science:

  • Reproductive medicine
  • Integrative medicine
  • Lactation support

Background:

  • Breastfeeding is recommended but often challenging for mothers.
  • Lactation insufficiency can lead to early breastfeeding cessation.
  • Conventional methods may not always resolve breastfeeding issues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore acupuncture as a potential treatment for lactation insufficiency.
  • To document the effects of acupuncture on maternal milk production in a specific case.

Main Methods:

  • A case study approach was used.
  • Acupuncture was administered to a mother with confirmed lactation insufficiency.
  • Maternal milk production was assessed by measuring residual milk volume post-feeding.

Main Results:

  • Acupuncture treatment was associated with enhanced milk production from both breasts.
  • The intervention contributed to successful breastfeeding for the infant.
  • Residual milk volume increased significantly after acupuncture sessions.

Conclusions:

  • Acupuncture shows promise as an adjunct therapy for lactation insufficiency.
  • Further research is warranted to investigate the efficacy of acupuncture in larger populations.
  • This case highlights a potential non-pharmacological approach to support breastfeeding mothers.
