Background:

  • Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) are a primary cause of occupational illness.
  • Nursing assistants and service forces are particularly vulnerable to low back pain due to manual labor demands.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of corrective exercise training versus ergonomic principles training for low back pain.
  • To evaluate outcomes in nursing assistants and service forces.

Main Methods:

  • A nonrandomized clinical trial involved 75 staff with low back pain.
  • Participants were assigned to corrective exercise, ergonomic training, or a control group.
  • Pain intensity and disability were assessed pre- and post-8-week interventions.

Main Results:

  • Corrective exercise group showed significantly lower pain intensity (3.8 ± 1.5) compared to ergonomic (4.7 ± 1.4) and control (5.5 ± 1.7) groups (P=0.001).
  • The corrective exercise group also reported significantly lower disability scores (17.3 ± 9.6) than the ergonomic (21.8 ± 12.6) and control (25.3 ± 11.2) groups (P<0.001).

Conclusions:

  • Both corrective exercises and ergonomic training reduce low back pain and disability.
  • Corrective exercise training demonstrates superior effectiveness compared to ergonomic principles training for low back pain management.
