    Area of Science:

    • Photonics and Optical Engineering
    • Remote Sensing Technology
    • Laser Systems

    Background:

    • Single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) offer high sensitivity for light detection and ranging (lidar).
    • Traditional lidar methods using multiple pulses improve signal-to-noise ratio but suffer from low detection speeds, especially in daytime conditions with background noise.
    • Existing systems face limitations in achieving both high speed and long unambiguous distances for lidar applications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a novel coded-pulse-bunch-laser-based single-photon lidar system.
    • To enhance ranging speed and expand the unambiguous distance for lidar applications.
    • To enable fast 3D single-photon lidar imaging with high data refreshing rates.

    Main Methods:

    • A coded-pulse-bunch-laser lidar system utilizing SPADs was designed and constructed.
    • An encoding method was developed for the laser pulse bunches.
    • Time-of-flight (TOF) ranging information was extracted via real-time correlation using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA).

    Main Results:

    • The system demonstrated successful daytime ranging on a non-cooperative mountain target at a distance of 5.4 km.
    • The novel approach significantly improves ranging speed compared to traditional methods.
    • The unambiguous distance was extended to several kilometers.

    Conclusions:

    • The coded-pulse-bunch-laser single-photon lidar system offers a substantial advancement in lidar technology.
    • This method holds great potential for fast 3D single-photon lidar imaging applications.
    • The system's high data refreshing rate and large unambiguous distance are key advantages for future applications.
