Summary

Impacted maxillary canines frequently cause root resorption (RR) in adjacent teeth, particularly lateral incisors. Increased canine angulation significantly correlates with severe RR, detectable via CBCT imaging.

Background:

  • Impacted maxillary canines can lead to root resorption (RR) in adjacent teeth.
  • Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) aids in identifying features of impacted canines and associated pathologies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence, location, and severity of root resorption caused by impacted maxillary canines.
  • To investigate the association between impacted canine features and root resorption on CBCT.

Main Methods:

  • CBCT images of 89 subjects (108 impacted canines) with no prior orthodontic treatment were analyzed.
  • Parameters assessed included canine location, RR levels, occlusal/midline distances, and angulations.
  • Logistic regression evaluated the association between RR and measured canine parameters.

Main Results:

  • 60.2% of impacted canines caused root resorption in adjacent teeth; lateral incisors were most affected (34.3%).
  • Higher angulation of impacted canines correlated with more severe root resorption (p < 0.05).
  • Root resorption was more frequent in female subjects and most common at the apical third of the root.

Conclusions:

  • CBCT is sensitive for diagnosing root resorption location and severity related to impacted canines.
  • A significant association exists between the linear and angular features of impacted maxillary canines and root resorption.
