Toxicity Testing in Animals01:23

Toxicity Testing in Animals

Toxicity tests in animals are grounded on two main assumptions: first, the effects observed in laboratory animals can be extrapolated to humans, especially when adjusted for body surface area; second, high-dose exposure in animals is essential to identify potential human hazards from lower doses. This is based on the quantal dose-response concept, which faces the challenge of extrapolating results from relatively few test animals to much larger human populations. For example, a 0.01% incidence...

Area of Science:

  • Food safety assessment
  • Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Consumer concerns persist regarding the safety of genetically modified (GM) soybeans, despite regulatory approval.
  • Previous evaluations and legal sale of GM soybeans exist under government oversight.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a whole food toxicity assessment of commercially available GM soybeans.
  • To evaluate the safety of GM soybeans as a food source for consumers.

Main Methods:

  • Two commercial GM soybean varieties (GM-1 and -2) and one non-GM soybean were tested.
  • Sprague-Dawley rats (male and female) were orally administered low (1 g/kg/day) and high (5 g/kg/day) doses for 90 days.
  • Comprehensive analysis included body weight, organ weight, biochemistry, hematology, urology, and histopathology.

Main Results:

  • No biologically adverse effects were observed in body weight, organ weight, biochemistry, hematology, or urology.
  • Necropsy revealed no significant differences in organ weights between GM and non-GM soybean groups.
  • No gross or histopathological lesions were found in rats fed high doses of GM or non-GM soybeans.

Conclusions:

  • Commercial GM soybeans demonstrated substantial equivalence to non-GM soybeans in this 90-day rat feeding study.
  • The food safety assessment supports the safety of GM soybeans as a food source.
