Targeted Cancer Therapies02:57

Targeted Cancer Therapies

7.9K
The targeted cancer therapies, also known as “molecular targeted therapies,” take advantage of the molecular and genetic differences between the cancer cells and the normal cells. It needs a thorough understanding of the cancer cells to develop drugs that can target specific molecular aspects that drive the growth, progression, and spread of cancer cells without affecting the growth and survival of other normal cells in the body.
There are several types of targeted therapies against...

Experimental RNAi

6.3K
RNA interference (RNAi) is a cellular mechanism that inhibits gene expression by suppressing its transcription or activating the RNA degradation process. The mechanism was discovered by Andrew Fire and Craig Mello in 1998 in plants. Today, it is observed in almost all eukaryotes, including protozoa, flies, nematodes, insects, parasites, and mammals. This precise cellular mechanism of gene silencing has been developed into a technique that provides an efficient way to identify and determine the...

Microorganisms in Medicine and Therapeutics

443
Microorganisms play a fundamental role in vaccine development, gene therapy, and therapeutic production. Their biological properties are harnessed to advance medicine and public health. Beyond immunization, microorganisms contribute to gut health, antibiotic synthesis, and genetic disease treatment.Live Attenuated and Inactivated VaccinesLive attenuated vaccines, such as the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, utilize weakened forms of pathogens to closely resemble natural infections.

Types of RNA

69.0K
Overview
Three main types of RNA are involved in protein synthesis: messenger RNA (mRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA), and ribosomal RNA (rRNA). These RNAs perform diverse functions and can be broadly classified as protein-coding or non-coding RNA. Non-coding RNAs play important roles in the regulation of gene expression in response to developmental and environmental changes. Non-coding RNAs in prokaryotes can be manipulated to develop more effective antibacterial drugs for human or animal use.

Area of Science:

  • Molecular Biology
  • Genetics
  • Cancer Research

Background:

  • Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) are RNA molecules not translated into protein, playing key regulatory roles.
  • They influence gene expression at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels, impacting development, oncogenesis, and immunity.
  • Referred to as 'the dark matter of the nucleus,' ncRNAs are vital for understanding physiologic and pathologic processes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the role of ncRNA therapeutics in prostate cancer.
  • To explore the fundamental biological aspects of ncRNAs.
  • To highlight the therapeutic potential of ncRNAs in oncology.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review focusing on ncRNA function and therapeutic applications.
  • Analysis of existing research on ncRNA in prostate carcinoma.
  • Exploration of biological mechanisms of ncRNA action.

Main Results:

  • ncRNAs regulate gene expression with critical effects in various biological processes.
  • Significant therapeutic potential exists for ncRNAs in cancer treatment, including prostate cancer.
  • Some ncRNA therapeutics are already approved, indicating clinical viability.

Conclusions:

  • Understanding ncRNAs opens vast opportunities for basic and translational research.
  • ncRNA therapeutics, alone or in combination, may improve cancer treatment strategies.
  • Further research into ncRNAs is essential for advancing therapeutic interventions in prostate carcinoma.
