    Background:

    • Ophthalmia neonatorum, caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, was the first identified manifestation of infant chlamydial infection.
    • For decades, it was believed to be the sole infant manifestation of maternal chlamydial infections.
    • Advances in cell culture techniques have revealed other significant chlamydial effects in infants, including afebrile pneumonia.

    • To assess the risk of perinatal transmission of Chlamydia trachomatis to infants.
