Ankle Joint01:10

Ankle Joint

2.0K
The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Functional Classification of Joints

Functional Classification of Joints
The functional classification of joints is determined by the amount of mobility between the adjacent bones. Joints are functionally classified as a synarthrosis or immobile joint, an amphiarthrosis or slightly moveable joint, or as a diarthrosis, a freely moveable joint. Fibrous and cartilaginous joints can be functionally classified as either synarthroses  or amphiarthroses, whereas all synovial joints are classified as diarthroses.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Arthroscopy
  • Foot and Ankle Reconstruction

Background:

  • End-stage ankle arthritis commonly affects younger, active individuals.
  • Treatment choice for ankle arthritis is patient-specific.
  • Open ankle arthrodesis is a reliable, established procedure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the surgical technique of arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis.
  • To compare the outcomes of arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis with open ankle fusion and total ankle replacement.

Main Methods:

  • Description of the arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis surgical technique.
  • Review and comparison of outcomes data from existing literature for open ankle fusion and total ankle replacement.

Main Results:

  • Arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis is presented as an advantageous and feasible technique.
  • The technique is considered viable even in the presence of significant intraarticular deformity.
  • Outcomes are discussed in comparison to open arthrodesis and total ankle replacement.

Conclusions:

  • Arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis is a potentially superior surgical option for end-stage ankle arthritis.
  • The minimally invasive approach offers benefits over traditional open surgery.
  • Further comparative studies may elucidate definitive advantages over total ankle replacement.
