Ankle Joint

2.0K
The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Podiatric Medicine
  • Biomechanical Engineering

Background:

  • Ankle arthritis often presents with complex deformities requiring surgical intervention.
  • Open ankle arthrodesis is a well-established procedure for managing end-stage ankle arthritis.
  • Addressing associated lower extremity deformities is crucial for successful ankle fusion outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the efficacy of open ankle arthrodesis in the presence of deformity.
  • To highlight the importance of preoperative evaluation in planning surgical strategy.
  • To discuss various techniques for managing deformity during ankle fusion.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of studies on open ankle arthrodesis with deformity.
  • Analysis of preoperative clinical and radiographic assessment methods.
  • Evaluation of surgical techniques and fixation options for ankle fusion.

Main Results:

  • Open ankle arthrodesis demonstrates high union rates in arthritic ankles with deformity.
  • Preoperative assessment of deformity guides surgical approach and fixation.
  • Various techniques effectively address intra-articular and extra-articular deformities.

Conclusions:

  • Open ankle arthrodesis is a reliable solution for ankle arthritis complicated by deformity.
  • Comprehensive preoperative evaluation is essential for optimal surgical planning and outcomes.
  • Successful management of deformity leads to improved functional results and high fusion rates.
