Background:

Community energy initiatives are volunteer-led efforts promoting sustainable energy behaviors.
Understanding motivations for public involvement is crucial for successful energy transitions.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate factors influencing involvement in community energy initiatives.
To examine the roles of personal sustainable energy motivation, community identification, interpersonal contact, and perceived community motivation.

Main Methods:

A questionnaire study was conducted among 439 inhabitants across seven local communities.
Statistical analyses were used to assess the relationships between personal and community factors and initiative involvement.

Main Results:

Personal sustainable energy motivation, community identification, and interpersonal contact were significantly related to initiative involvement.
Stronger community identification and more interpersonal contact positively predicted involvement.
Perceived community motivation for sustainable energy did not uniquely predict initiative involvement.

Conclusions:

Community factors, specifically identification and interpersonal contact, play a significant role in driving participation in sustainable energy initiatives.
These findings highlight the importance of social connections and belonging in fostering community-led sustainable energy transitions.
Implications for community organizers and policymakers to enhance engagement strategies are discussed.
