Summary

Dental procedures generate few small aerosols, posing a limited risk for COVID-19 airborne transmission. Current infection control measures focusing on droplet and contact precautions are sufficient for aerosol-generating dental procedures (AGDP).

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Aerosol Science

Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic raised concerns about airborne transmission during dental procedures.
  • Aerosol-generating dental procedures (AGDP) produce droplets and aerosols, but transmission risks are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure and characterize particle sizes generated by dental devices.
  • To assess the risk of COVID-19 airborne transmission during AGDP.
  • To provide data for effective infection control protocols.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized laser diffraction analysis to measure particle size distribution.
  • Differentiated between droplets and aerosols generated from dental devices.
  • Evaluated the efficacy of extraoral suction in mitigating aerosol spread.

Main Results:

  • Dental devices produced droplets and aerosols with a wide size range, mostly larger than 50 μm.
  • AGDP generated minimal aerosols less than 5 μm, the size relevant for airborne pulmonary infections.
  • Extraoral suction effectively reduced aerosol dispersion from high-speed dental engines.

Conclusions:

  • The risk of aerosol infection during routine dental practice is limited.
  • Standard precautions focusing on droplet and contact transmission are adequate for AGDP.
  • The absence of reported dental clinic COVID-19 outbreaks suggests AGDP is not a significant SARS-CoV-2 transmission source.
