Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a cost-effective task trainer for auricular hematoma drainage.
  • To enhance EM residents' skills in drainage and pressure dressing application.
  • To assess the impact of the trainer on resident confidence levels.

Main Methods:

  • A task trainer was created using a bell pepper.
  • The trainer was implemented in an EM simulation conference for 20 residents (PGY 1-3).
  • Pre- and post-simulation surveys assessed confidence levels using a 5-point Likert scale.

Main Results:

  • Pre-simulation confidence in auricular hematoma drainage was low (mean: 2.2, SD: 1.08).
  • Post-simulation confidence significantly increased (mean: 4.4, SD: 0.6).
