Summary

Problem-based learning (PBL) significantly improved medical students' clinical judgment scores compared to lecture-based learning (LBL). Facilitator experience in PBL did not impact student performance on surgical decision-making examinations.

Background:

  • Traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) is a common educational method.
  • Problem-based learning (PBL) offers an alternative pedagogical approach.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of PBL versus LBL in enhancing surgical clinical decision-making skills.
  • To evaluate the impact of facilitator experience (attending vs. intern) in PBL.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective randomized trial involving 175 medical students.
  • Students were allocated to LBL, PBL led by an attending, or PBL led by an intern.
  • Clinical judgment was assessed via a standard post-training examination.

Main Results:

  • Problem-based learning (PBL) groups achieved significantly higher scores than the lecture-based learning (LBL) group (P=0.048).
  • No significant difference in scores was observed between PBL groups facilitated by attending physicians or interns (P=0.892).

Conclusions:

  • Problem-based learning (PBL) is a more effective method than lecture-based learning (LBL) for improving surgical decision-making skills.
  • The level of facilitator experience in PBL does not significantly affect student outcomes in this context.
