    Summary

    This randomized trial found that aerosolized ribavirin improved cough and respiratory rates in infants with bronchiolitis. The antiviral treatment was well-tolerated and showed promising results for managing this common respiratory illness.

    Background:

    • Bronchiolitis is a common viral respiratory infection in infants.
    • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is the primary causative agent.
    • Current treatments are largely supportive.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of aerosolized ribavirin in treating infantile bronchiolitis.
    • To assess the impact of ribavirin on clinical outcomes and viral clearance.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
    • 26 infants with clinically diagnosed bronchiolitis received either nebulized ribavirin or normal saline aerosol for at least three days.
    • Clinical variables and viral shedding were monitored.

    Main Results:

    • Ribavirin treatment showed trends favoring faster improvement in cough, crepitations, respiratory rate, and heart rate.
    • Significant reductions in chest recession were observed in infants with confirmed RSV.
    • No difference in viral clearance rates was noted between groups.
    • Treatment was well-tolerated with no significant adverse effects.

    Conclusions:

    • Nebulized ribavirin may be a beneficial treatment option for certain cases of infantile bronchiolitis.
    • Further research is warranted to confirm its role in managing this condition.
