This study found no link between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) severity and prostate cancer (PC) aggressiveness, despite SDB being common in PC patients. Further research is needed to understand this relationship.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Sleep Medicine
- Oncology
Background:
- Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is linked to aggressive melanoma.
- The association between SDB severity and other cancers, like prostate cancer (PC), remains unclear.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between SDB severity and prostate cancer aggressiveness.
- To determine if SDB influences PC tumor stage, Gleason score, or metastasis.
Main Methods:
- 165 prostate cancer patients underwent home respiratory polygraphy to assess SDB using the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and oximetric parameters.
- PC aggressiveness was evaluated using Gleason score, tumor stage, and presence of metastasis.
Main Results:
- A high prevalence of SDB was observed in PC patients (AHI≥5 in 78.2%, AHI≥15 in 46.7%).
- No significant differences in median AHI or SDB prevalence were found between patients with varying Gleason scores, tumor stages, or metastatic status.
- Oximetric variables also showed no association with PC aggressiveness.
Conclusions:
- The study did not find evidence to support an association between SDB severity and prostate cancer aggressiveness.
- Despite the high prevalence of SDB in this cohort, it does not appear to be a determining factor in PC aggressiveness.
