Developing research knowledge and capability in undergraduate nurses: evaluation of targeted placements

Background:

• Limited opportunities exist for undergraduate nurses in research design and conduct.
• A project was initiated to implement and evaluate a placement focused on developing research knowledge and skills.

Purpose of the Study:

• To implement and evaluate a nursing placement program.
• To enhance undergraduate nurses' research knowledge and skills through experiential learning.

Main Methods:

• A four-week placement was established, assigning students to quality improvement/service evaluation projects.
• Evaluation included student questionnaires (pre, post, one year), supervisor feedback, and organizational impact assessment (presentations, grants).

Main Results:

• 24 students across five cohorts participated in 17 projects (2017-2019).
• 100% of students reported enjoyment, increased research knowledge, and clinical insight.
• Post-placement, 88% considered service evaluation, 65% considered postgraduate study, and all supervisors found it valuable.
• Project results were shared locally, presented at eight conferences, and contributed to three grant submissions.

Conclusions:

• The program effectively prepares undergraduate nurses for research and aids organizations in tackling safety and quality issues.
• Increased placement capacity requires additional resources.
