Background:

Cross-sectoral collaboration is essential for providing comprehensive support services to children with social and behavioral health problems.
Understanding the structural characteristics of these complex networks is crucial for optimizing service delivery.
Previous research has limited comparative analysis of whole network structures in child service systems.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the structural differentiation (composition) and integration (interconnection) of complex child service delivery networks.
To investigate the specific structure of client referral within these networks.
To identify prominent organizations that could potentially fulfill a coordinating role.

Main Methods:

Comparative case study approach utilizing social network analysis.
Analysis of three interorganizational networks within the Dutch child service delivery system (65-135 organizations each).
Data collection through semi-structured interviews with network managers and online questionnaires for network members.

Main Results:

Networks exhibit similar differentiation across 11 sectors but striking diversity in integration, particularly in client referral structures.
Network members maintain contact with a high average of 20-26 organizations, posing challenges for effective management.
Organizations with gatekeeper roles are not consistently positioned centrally within the referral networks.

Conclusions:

The study provides a deeper understanding of differentiation and integration in complex child service delivery systems through comparative network research.
Insights gained are critical for improving service delivery and mitigating issues of service silos and fragmentation.
Identifying key organizational roles and network structures can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of support for children.
