Background:

  • Induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology and biobanking are crucial for advancing regenerative medicine and disease research.
  • Understanding public knowledge and attitudes is essential for the ethical and effective implementation of these technologies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the knowledge and attitudes of ethnically diverse individuals regarding iPSC technology and biobanking.
  • To identify potential associations between demographic factors, such as ethnicity and race, and knowledge/attitudes towards stem cells and biobanking.

Main Methods:

  • An online survey instrument was developed and administered to 276 ethnically diverse participants.
  • Statistical analyses, including chi-squared tests, were used to examine associations between variables (p ≤ 0.05).

Main Results:

  • Significant associations were found between ethnicity/race and knowledge of stem cell properties, types, and prior sample donation behavior.
  • White participants (39%) reported higher prior knowledge of iPSCs than Black or African-American participants (19.2%).

Conclusions:

  • White race was significantly associated with greater knowledge of stem cells and biobanks.
  • Greater willingness to donate samples for future research was also linked to White race.
