Nursing Assessment01:29

Nursing Assessment

8.2K
The two sources for collecting information are primary and secondary. After gathering information, interpretation and validation help to complete the data. The purpose of assessment is to establish data with the initial information, to interpret data about the patient's perceived needs and health problems, and to respond to these problems identified.
The nurse collects all aspects of the patient's health in the initial assessment, establishing priorities for ongoing focused assessments...

Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

472
Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Nursing Evaluation01:15

Nursing Evaluation

3.7K
The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis

1.8K
The nursing process provides a clinical decision-making framework for patients and families to establish and implement a personalized care plan. Since part of the nurse's duties is to teach patients, the steps of the nursing process are the most effective way to approach instruction. The nursing process and the teaching-learning process are inextricably linked.
It is critical to determine the patient's learning needs during the assessment. Determination of learning needs compounds data...

Treatment Resistant Cancers02:56

Treatment Resistant Cancers

3.4K
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. A cancer cell is genetically unstable and hence can mutate faster. They can also modify their microenvironment and escape immune surveillance. The difficulties in treating cancer are further compounded by the emergence of rapid resistance to anticancer drugs. The most common ways to attain resistance in cancer cells include alteration in drug transport and metabolism, modification of drug target, elevated DNA damage response, or...

Cancer Therapies02:49

Cancer Therapies

8.0K
Cancer therapies are various modes of treatment, such as surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy that are administered to cancer patients.
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...

Summary

Many oncologists do not use geriatric assessments (GAs) due to perceived burdens. Increased education on GA benefits for older cancer patients could improve utilization and patient outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Geriatric oncology
  • Cancer care delivery
  • Clinical practice guidelines

Background:

  • Standardized geriatric assessments (GAs) improve quality of life and reduce toxicity in older adults with cancer.
  • GAs are recommended by guidelines for treatment decisions in geriatric oncology.
  • Understanding community oncologists' adoption of GAs is crucial for improving care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate community oncologists' awareness and use of geriatric assessments (GAs) in cancer treatment decision-making.
  • To identify barriers to GA implementation in routine oncology practice.
  • To assess the current landscape of GA tool utilization among oncologists.

Main Methods:

  • A survey of 349 US-based oncologists was conducted between September 2019 and February 2020.
  • The survey collected data on treatment decision-making processes and practice challenges.
  • Respondents' knowledge and utilization of geriatric assessment tools were assessed.

Main Results:

  • 74% of surveyed oncologists practice in a community setting.
  • 60% of oncologists do not use formal GAs, citing implementation difficulty (44%) and perceived lack of added value (36%).
  • Validated GA instruments like the Mini-Mental State Exam (54%) and Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (23%) were variably used; 19% were unaware of any validated tools.

Conclusions:

  • Perceived challenges in implementation and value hinder GA adoption by many oncologists.
  • Enhanced education on the benefits of GA-directed therapy is needed to increase utilization.
  • Improving GA uptake can optimize cancer treatment for older adults.
