Background:

  • COVID-19 pandemic restrictions impacted research and networking for Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Mentored Career Development Award (KL2) scholars.
  • Traditional academic interactions, including research, travel, and conferences, were significantly disrupted.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and evaluate a national virtual visiting scholar program for KL2 scholars.
  • To provide KL2 scholars opportunities to virtually visit other CTSA hubs, present research, and build professional networks.

Main Methods:

  • A national virtual visiting scholar program was developed, including application and selection processes.
  • Anonymized surveys were administered to scholars post-visit and at 6 months, and to program directors to assess program effectiveness and gather feedback.
  • Data collected from November 2020 to May 2021 involved 56 KL2 scholars and 27 CTSA hubs.

Main Results:

  • Nearly all (97.7%) participating scholars found the virtual visit valuable and would recommend the program.
  • Within 6 months, 73.5% of scholars contacted host hub personnel, and 34.7% initiated new collaborations.
  • Host hubs found the program valuable for their own scholars, with 92% indicating likelihood to participate in future rounds.

Conclusions:

  • The virtual Visiting Scholar Program effectively facilitated networking and collaboration for KL2 scholars.
  • The program model is adaptable for other national career development initiatives facing similar logistical challenges.
