Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify reliable post-mortem carcass measurements for predicting the muscle and bone content of growing rabbits.
  • To evaluate the predictive accuracy and precision of various linear and circumference measurements.
  • To establish a basis for using carcass traits as indicators of tissue composition.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty male New Zealand White × Californian rabbits (60-80 days old) were used.
  • Post-mortem measurements including carcass length, dorsal length, thoracic depth, thigh length, lumbar circumference, and carcass weight were recorded.
  • Compactness Index (CCW/CL) was calculated, and muscle and bone weights were determined after deboning.

Main Results:

  • The Compactness Index (CCI) was a strong predictor of total carcass muscle (TCM), explaining 93% of the variation (R² = 0.93).
  • Dorsal length (DL) was the best predictor for total carcass bone (TCB), explaining 60% of the variation (R² = 0.60).
  • Other carcass measurements showed predictive capabilities within the R² range of 0.60 to 0.95.

Conclusions:

  • Post-mortem carcass measurements provide accurate and precise alternatives for predicting carcass tissue composition in growing rabbits.
  • The Compactness Index and Dorsal Length are valuable metrics for estimating muscle and bone content, respectively.
  • These findings support the integration of simple carcass measurements into rabbit evaluation protocols for improved efficiency.
