This study evaluates a new social prescribing service to improve mental health and well-being for UK higher education students. The realist evaluation will determine how and why this non-medical support enhances student well-being.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Higher Education Studies
- Mental Health Research
Background:
- Increasing numbers of UK higher education students report mental health and well-being issues.
- Social prescribing offers community-based, non-medical support, widely implemented across the UK.
- This study protocol outlines an innovative social prescribing service evaluation for UK higher education students.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conduct a realist evaluation of a novel social prescribing service for UK higher education students.
- To articulate the mechanisms, context, and extent of social prescribing's effectiveness in enhancing student well-being.
- To develop a framework detailing how, why, when, and to what extent the social prescribing model functions for students.
Main Methods:
- A mixed-methods sequential realist evaluation design across four cycles.
- Cycle 1: Realist Review, Group Concept Mapping, and film production for model development.
- Cycles 2-4: Secondary data analysis, outcome measurements, qualitative interviews, and stakeholder workshops to refine the evaluation framework.
Main Results:
- Ethical approval obtained for secondary data analysis and qualitative data collection.
- The evaluation will utilize a meta-matrix to synthesize findings across cycles.
- An advisory group of key stakeholders will guide each evaluation cycle.
Conclusions:
- The study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of social prescribing's impact on student well-being.
- Findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals, reports, films, and conferences.
- The evaluation will establish a framework for implementing and optimizing social prescribing services in higher education settings.
