Background:

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated innovative regulatory compliance methods for healthcare accreditation.
The Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) developed a virtual site visit process to maintain trauma center accreditation standards.
This adaptation addressed challenges posed by government regulations and health concerns regarding on-site participation.

Purpose of the Study:

To document the experience of an accrediting body in implementing virtual accreditation site visit surveys.
To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of virtual surveys for Level I and II trauma centers.

Main Methods:

The PTSF piloted a virtual survey process in 2021.
Two virtual accreditation surveys were successfully completed.

Main Results:

Participant feedback revealed both positive and negative aspects of the virtual format.
The virtual surveys maintained a high quality of accreditation.
Identified downsides included reduced interaction, collaboration, and educational opportunities, alongside increased presurvey workload.

Conclusions:

Both in-person and virtual formats can achieve accreditation goals.
The traditional on-site accreditation process is generally preferred.
Virtual formats are best suited for extenuating circumstances.
