Perigraft seroma: long-term complications.

J G LeBlanc, D J Vince, G P Taylor

The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery
    |September 1, 1986

    Summary

A perigraft seroma in a child with a polytetrafluoroethylene graft was managed conservatively for four years. This approach maintained graft function and prevented pulmonary artery distortion.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiovascular Surgery
    • Pediatric Surgery
    • Medical Device Complications

    Background:

    • Management of perigraft seroma after cardiovascular surgery in children can be challenging.
    • Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) grafts are used in pediatric cardiovascular procedures.
    • Long-term outcomes of conservative management for seroma in pediatric PTFE grafts are not well-documented.

    Observation:

    • A case report details a 5 1/2-year-old child with a perigraft seroma.
    • The seroma complicated a polytetrafluoroethylene tubular graft.
    • Conservative management was pursued for a duration of 4 years.

    Findings:

    • Conservative management did not disrupt the function of the polytetrafluoroethylene graft.
    • No progressive distortion of the pulmonary arteries was observed during the 4-year follow-up.
    • This suggests a favorable outcome for conservative seroma management in this context.

    Implications:

    • Conservative management may be a viable option for perigraft seromas in pediatric patients with PTFE grafts.
    • This approach can potentially avoid more invasive interventions.
    • Further studies are warranted to confirm the long-term efficacy and safety of this management strategy.
