Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Rehabilitation Science
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • COVID-19 pandemic disrupted community-based falls prevention programs for older adults.
  • Digital delivery of exercise and rehabilitation was rapidly adopted despite limited evidence.
  • Continuity of care was a key consideration during pandemic-related service changes.

Observation:

  • A condensed version of the Otago Exercise Program was digitally delivered to an 83-year-old female with high falls risk.
  • The intervention was implemented over a four-week period.
  • Patient adherence and engagement were monitored throughout the digital program.

Findings:

  • Significant improvements were observed in the patient's Timed Up and Go (TUG) scores.
  • The Five Times Sit to Stand (FTSTS) test performance showed notable enhancement.
  • Improvements were also recorded in the 30-Second Chair Stand Test (30sCST) and One Leg Stance (OLS) test results.

Implications:

  • Digital delivery of exercise programs is a promising method for falls prevention in older adults.
  • This approach can ensure continuity of care, especially during public health crises.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the efficacy and scalability of digitally delivered falls prevention interventions.
