Summary

Laparoscopic surgery successfully attenuated extrahepatic portosystemic shunts in two cats. This minimally invasive technique proved feasible, safe, and effective for treating portosystemic shunts in feline patients.

Background:

  • Extrahepatic portosystemic shunts are congenital portosystemic vascular anomalies that can cause significant health issues in cats.
  • Surgical attenuation is a common treatment, but traditional open surgery can be invasive.
  • Laparoscopy offers a minimally invasive alternative for surgical procedures.

Observation:

  • This case series evaluated the use of a laparoscopic technique for gradual attenuation of extrahepatic portosystemic shunts in two cats.
  • A right or left lateral laparoscopic approach was employed for the surgical procedures.
  • Diagnostic imaging (ultrasonography or CT angiography) was utilized to assess surgical outcomes.

Findings:

  • Further research with larger patient numbers is warranted to fully establish the long-term efficacy and benefits of this laparoscopic approach in veterinary surgery.
